Did you know...
Wolves are not a pack animal!
Through a somewhat poorly done research program in the 1960's, it was seen that wolves would fight to maintain a hierarchical place within the pack. The stronger and more aggressive were able to maintain a higher place with more benefits. Papers were published and even a book was put to print and widely distributed. Very quickly the public saw wolves as pack animals that contained an Alpha mated pair and subordinates below them. Dominance of the pack became the watchword and unfortunately made its way into dog training. This led to a great deal of aggressive punishment during obedience training and for what is seen as poor manners at home.
Moving forward to present day with our ability to check the genetics of animals and therefore their relationships within a group, we find that all the wolves within a pack are related. In fact, the only two that are not related at all are the two that used to be called the Alpha pair. These are actually the Mother and Father to all the members of the group. The group is in reality a Family Unit consisting of a Breeding Pair and its offspring of current and previous breeding's. Once a young wolf is old enough it will leave the unit and seek a mate of a different family, spreading and mixing its genetics in order to make a stronger line.
