Started in 1995, K9 Komfort Inn was a small private boarding facility that catered to the boarding needs of dogs and cats. The two owners lived on the property and used the foundation of a barn to erect a 1,500 sq. ft. building with two boarding areas. The larger of the two was for dogs and the other served as a cattery and office. A kitchen was added to the dog section and a 10ft x 10ft storage building added to the end of the building on the cat side.
The property was small, 23 acres, and was covered in rough treed areas that were inaccessible. The road access was 1.5 km long and is maintained by the residents. The business had a small parking area, 1/2 acre grassed pen for dogs and 12 runs attached to the building. Although business was coming in, the upkeep of the property was difficult and time consuming. For these and other reasons the business was put up for sale and purchased by the current owners, Mark and Jenny Penny and their family.
Changes to the property, to the business capabilities and to its style of pet care were soon started. Over the course of 12 years the business has changed from a small dog and cat boarding facility that could house thirteen separate animals to one that can regularly house thirty. With expansion in 2009 to over 4,000 sq. ft. it now holds regular Obedience classes inside and Agility classes, since 2012, outside in a large fenced grass area with competition quality equipment. The 10 x 10 building was moved 100ft away and set up with electricity and is able to house 3 separate dogs for private boarding. Two 20ft x10ft runs are attached. Enrichments have been added to the pens by means of concrete pads to lay on, rock and log piles and tug toys attached to poles in the ground.
K9 Komfort Inn has always offered Canine Behavioural Modification sessions and now performs many sessions indoors along with assessments of dog behaviour. Dog to dog aggression is also tackled within our training room with follow ups often performed outside.
In 2014 we accepted the contract for the housing of stray dogs picked up by the animal control officer for HBM township. We took in over one dozen dogs and either found the original owners or found a suitable adopter. Although the work was rewarding emotionally, for various reasons we chose not to renew the contract for the second year. We still help with dogs that need to be rehabed and retrained in order to find new homes, but it is done on a case by case basis. The rehabilitation process involves preparing the dog for rehoming. This means that a fearful dog will be taught courage, a dog to dog aggressive dog will be taught calmness, an excitable dog will be shown the benefits of stillness, the same applies to cats. Over the period of our ownership of K9 Komfort Inn we have rehabilitated over thirty pets and are still working hard with some today. In conclusion to this history of K9 Komfort Inn, it is nice to say that we have been able to do as much for the pets in this area as they have done for us. We are looking forward to doing more in the future!
